WWII Navy Veteran
Louis John Bakes, of Norwalk, CT, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at the age of 89. He was born June 17, 1924 in Stamford, CT to the late John C. Bakes and Mary (Karalemas) Bakes. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Irene (Perkowski) Bakes in February 2009; and two brothers, George J. Bakes and Charles J. Bakes. He is survived by a nephew, John C. Bakes II of Wake Forest, NC; loving nieces Constance Reynolds and Stella Golfinpoulos Page; and by many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bakes worked as a truck driver for the Valerie Transportation Co retiring after 40 years of service in 1986. He then worked at St. Cecilia Parish in Stamford for 6 years. He was a WWII Navy veteran, served as a Boatswain's Mate Second Class, USN-I. His service included on board the NRS in New Haven, CT; NTS in Newport, RI; USN Fuel & Net Deport in Melville, RI; USS Lancewood (AM-48); USNH Treasure Island in San Francisco, CA; and the USN Personnel Separation Center in Long Island, NY. He was honored with the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, Victory Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Medal (1 star).
Family will receive relatives and friends from 11am to 12pm on Friday, January 17, 2014 with his funeral service to commence at 12pm at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford Street, in Stamford, CT. Rev. Dr. Harry Pappas will officiate. Interment will follow to the Willowbrook Cemetery, 395 Main Street, in Westport, CT.
