Turek, Frank A.

Frank A. Turek, 92, of Mahaney Road, King Ferry, NY died Sunday September 29, 2013 at his home. Mr. Turek was born in Wallington, NJ, the son of the late Andrew and Catherine Zielinski Turek and has resided in King Ferry since 1931. He graduated from King Ferry High School in 1939. He was a superb athlete in high school and went on to play semi pro baseball in the Old Post Standard League. In 1939 he pitched in the Inaugural High School All-Stars Baseball Game which was held during Baseball's Hall of Fame Induction Week in Cooperstown, NY. Mr. Turek began farming in the early 1940's on his father's farm. He eventually purchased his own farm, which he continuously expanded, ultimately becoming one of the largest farm operations in Cayuga County, growing field crops such as red kidney beans, wheat, oats and hay. In the 1970's Mr. Turek partnered with his sons to purchase a farmers vegetable co-op and together they began growing, packing and shipping fresh vegetables under the Turek Farms name and years later, after much hard work and determination they have become one of the largest growers of sweet corn in the United States. Mr. Turek strongly believed in giving back to his community. He established the Frank and Virginia Turek Scholarship Fund for Southern Cayuga Central School students pursuing agricultural studies in college. He served as president of the Aurora Rotary Club; he served as the first President of the Finger Lakes Sugar Beet Association and has served on several Cornell University Agricultural Boards. Surviving are two sons, David A. Turek and his wife Mary of King Ferry, NY, Frank A Turek, Jr. and his wife Mary Ann of King Ferry, NY; three grandchildren, Jason D. Turek and his wife Tina, King Ferry, NY, Michelle L. Turek, Lansing, NY, Michelle Steigerwald, Vestal, NY; eight great grandchildren, Kyle, Katie, Jacob, Andrew, Jordan, Maria, Amanda and Jonathan; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Turek was predeceased by his wife Virginia Z. Turek who died in 1996 and two brothers, Edward and Walter Turek, who died several years ago. Friends are invited to call at the Shakelton Funeral Home, Main Street, Aurora, NY from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday October 2, 2013. A memorial service will be held, Thursday October 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the King Ferry Presbyterian Church., King Ferry, NY.
