Graves, Leslie C.

Leslie C. Graves, 93 of Groton, NY died June 1, 2014 at the Groton Nursing Facility. Born March 26, 1921 in Brighouse, England he was the son of the late Norman and Laura Collinson Graves. He immigrated with his family to the United States in 1929 during the Great Depression where upon his family settled in central New York state where Leslie's father, Norman, was a Methodist minister. Leslie graduated from Union Endicott High School in 1939 and from the State University of NY at Albany in 1943. Upon graduation he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant JG, teaching Navy pilots to fly in Corpus Christi, Texas from 1943 until just after World War II. He was married March 26, 1944 to Marjorie Church in central NY. Leslie started his career in education in 1946 as a science teacher in Livingston Manor, NY, accepting his first position as school principal in Laurens, NY and he held the position from 1950-1955. From there he moved to Edmeston, NY where he served as principal from 1955-1963. Moving to Groton, he served as supervising principal until his retirement at Groton Central School from 1963-1982. For the next several years he served at multiple schools in central NY as interim principal and superintendent. He had been a member of the Groton Community Church, Groton Rotary Club and a fellow member of the Groton Masonic Lodge #496 F&AM. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marjorie of Ithaca, NY; his son, Eric (Nancy) Graves of Thousand Oaks, CA; his daughter, Katherine (Randolph) Haus of Trumansburg, NY; five grandchildren, Keith and Drew Graves, Lauren Crisman, and Terrence and Douglas Haus; and three great grandchildren, Haley and Anna Graves and Thomas Haus; his sister, Bessie Giambra of Rochester, NY. He was predeceased by his son, Terrence and daughter, Deborah. The family will receive friends at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton, on Saturday, June 14, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:45 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Groton Community Church, 204 East Cortland St., Groton, on Sunday, June 15 at 1:00 p.m. with full military honors. In lieu of flowers the family graciously request memorial contributions be made to Groton Nursing Facility, 120 Sykes St., Groton, NY 13073 (Activities Department).
