Barden, Jr., Robert Strong

Candor, New York: Robert Strong Barden Jr., 74, died at home on Monday, June 24, 2013, after a multi-year battle with cancer. He was born May 31, 1939 in Canandaigua, NY. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Strong Barden and Pauline Hover Barden and cherished niece, Polly Ann Tompkins. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 49 years, Lois Howe Barden; son, Robert S. (Wendy Hackett) Barden III, Dryden, NY; grandson, Ryan Hackett, Dryden, NY; sisters, Eudora (Clifford) Morgan, Meza, AZ, Hope (Richard) VanScoy, Candor, NY, Rebecca (Sam) Phillips, Brooktondale, NY; several nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law; special family friend, Rex Barden; numerous friends. Following his 1957 graduation from Candor High School, Bob joined the Army. He was employed by NYSEG, R.B. Robinson Contracting, and was a gentleman farmer for most of his life. An active and respected member of his community, he belonged to the Candor Fire Department for over 35 years. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Catatonk, NY and currently Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, Owego, NY. He was a bowler, a digger, a pincher, a teaser, a radar detector, a fighter of fires and cancer, a coffee drinker, a laugher, a crier, and a man full of faith. All the cattle on his farm knew all three verses of "Don't Fence Me In". His greatest love was Loie. "I married her young so I could bring her up the way I wanted." Funeral services will be celebrated on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 300 Main St., Owego with the Rev. William Moorby, officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday Evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Candor, NY.
