Ronald W. Mayes
Ronald Wayne Mayes, age 61 of Clarksville passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Celebration of life service 11 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2013 St. James Missionary Baptist Church with the family present 10 a.m. Burial Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation Friday, February 15, 2013 12 Noon-4 p.m. at Foston Funeral Home. Visitation continues 6 p.m.-8 p.m. with the family at First Missionary Baptist Church.
He was born August 30, 1951 in Nashville, TN to the late Clyde and Bessie Strong Mayes. He graduated from Pearl High School class of 1969.
He served as Organist/Minister of Music in five other states and two foreign countries, and was Chief organist for People Helping People, Inc. Clarksville, TN; organist with the Clarksville Chapter of Middle Tennessee Musicians and Directors Association; and was a lifetime member GMWA; lifetime member of Operation PUSH National Choir of America; member of the Broadcast Music Institute (BMI); lifetime member of "Entertainment International ", and was a certified "Master Musician."
He retired from the U.S. Army November 19, 1989 as a Sergeant First Class with 20 years and 2 months of distinguished servce. Awards include: the Bronze Star Medal, Army the Commendation Medal (5 Awards), Good Conduct Medal (6 Awards), Vietnam Service Medal (5 Stars), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3 Awards), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2 Awards) Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry (with palm), National Defense Service Medal, Four Overseas Bars, Expert Marksmanship Badge, and Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Medal (1st Class).
He leaves to cherish his memory wife, JoAnn Pettus-Mayes; son, Ronald Wayne Mayes, Jr. of Pulaski, TN; grandchild, Jordan Mayes; brother Theodore (Shelia) Mayes of Flint, MI and a host of family and friends.
