WINTER HAVEN - Gordon S. Johnson, 93, of Winter Haven, FL died Monday, May 28, 2012 at the Life Care Center of Winter Haven from natural causes.
Born July 25, 1918 in Petersburg, IN to Basil and Lillian Selby Johnson, he moved to Dundee, FL in 1988 from Sheboygan, WI. For a number of years, Gordon was a member of St. Luke's Methodist Church in Sheboygan, WI, where he was a tireless worker and teacher. Later after moving to Florida, he again served at Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church in Winter Haven as both a Sunday School Teacher and Disciple Trainer.
Gordon was a 1939 graduate of Purdue University in La Fayette, IN with an Electrical Engineering degree. He then went on to work for the Kohler Company in Kohler, WI, where he worked for most of his career (47 years) and for 25 years was the Director of Koehler's generator design. During WWII Gordon proudly served his country as a Merchant Marine. He was a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (I.E.E.E.) and the Society of Automotive Engineers, and a member of the Electrical Generating Systems Assoc. and held a number of patents in the area of electric generator controls.
Gordon was a member of the Lakeland Runners Club and for a number of years he participated in the Senior Olympics, becoming a National Senior Gold Medalist. He was an avid sports enthusiast, either attending or watching on television the Gator and/of Purdue basketball games.
Preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Overstreet Johnson, he is survived by: his wife Alice Woods-Johnson; two sons, Lowell Johnson and his wife Jane of Sheboygan, WI, and Gordon Johnson, Jr. of Berlin, WI; five daughters, Anne Lawrence and her husband Alan of Lavalle, WI, Judith Brown and her husband Charles of Winona, MS, Martha Sturomski and her husband Douglas of Hopewell Junction, NY, Carol Lesch and her husband Ron of Sheboygan, WI, and Mary Johnson of Winter Haven, FL; a sister, Nancy Pitchers of Evansville, IN; twelve grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at 10:00am, Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens.
