LAKELAND - Herbert Andrew Smith, 83, of Lakeland, Florida passed away from heart failure on Sunday January 27, 2014 at his home.
Herb was born on June 7, 1930 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Herbert Spencer and Naomi Cox Smith, who have preceded him in death. His second wife, Marjorie Lou Smith, also preceded him in death. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War as a military police officer and was stationed in Japan. He worked for more than30 years at the Indianapolis Star newspaper. He retired from the Broward County Sheriff's Department after serving 10 years as a deputy.
Herb was also preceded in death by his sisters, Betty "Teet" Mann and Lois Howard and mother-in-law, Bernice Hensley.
Herb is survived by his wife of 24 years, Dianne Lorraine Smith, his daughter Andrea Lou (John) Barfield, 2 grandsons Lucas Andrew Barfield and Logan Alexander Barfield of St. Cloud, Florida, step-daughter, Jennifer (Terry) Ritter and her children Dane Ritter and Kristen Rivera of Peachtree, Georgia. Herb is also survived by three children from his first marriage, Janet Lynne, June Ellen and James Smith and his nephew David Butler, step-daughter Lorraine Ellen Taunton and step-sons, Jackson Taunton IV and Jonathan David Taunton.
Herb loved to play baseball and was thrilled to have played a tournament game in Wrigley Field in Chicago with his Indianapolis Star team. He also played basketball and ran track in high school. As an avid bowler, he earned a ring for his highest game of 299.
Interment will be Friday February 21, 2014 at 2 PM at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida with military honors.
