Michael was born 15 Sept, 1927 in Detroit, MI. He is survived by his sister, Lydia (Gene) Francis of Birmingham, Michigan and sister-in-law Barbara Cheger of Westland, MI. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Donald and grandson Christian Barnard. He graduated from Highland Park High School, earned a BA from the University of Detroit in chemical engineering and received his MBA in 1960 from Wayne State University. He worked for Ford Motor Company from 1952 until 1968 and retired from Masco Corp as Plant Manager in 1988. He married Jean Glidden on 12 June, 1948 at the Highland Park Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dr. Jean Cheger (Delta College professor emeritus, retired), daughter Cheryl Cheger-Timm (Larry Timm), of Bay City, son David Michael Cheger of Tampa, FL, daughter Judge Laura (Ronald) Barnard of Metamora, MI, grandchildren Justin (Jonae) Cheger, Andrew (Olga) Barnard, Christopher Barnard, Cornell Michael Barnard, Alexandra Timm and great grandchildren Keziah Cheger, Tristen Michael Barnard and Anastasia Barnard.
A memorial celebration will be held this summer in Saginaw. An avid golfer all his adult life, he continued to place and win his league golf flights until very recently. A source of great pride for him was the graduation of all three of his children from the University of Michigan. Fittingly, he enjoyed his last evening Thursday night watching the Wolverines win their opening conference basketball game against the University of Minnesota. He was always in the game, right to the end!
