BIRD, 56
Mechanical Engineer

HOUSTON, TX. - Mr. Richard Ashton Bird, 56, passed away January 14, 2013 in Houston, Texas, due to cardiovascular disease.
"Ricky" was born in Lakeland, FL, on August 1, 1956. He graduated from Lakeland High School and the University of Florida. He was a mechanical engineer who spent his professional career in the oil and gas engineering in Louisiana and Texas, where he worked for firms of United Gas Pipeline, Ford, Bacon & Davis, Stone & Webster, Kvaer-ner Process and Gulf Interstate Engineering.
He was one of those rare individuals born with an uncanny knack for engineering and was well respected in his field.
Affectionately known to his friends as "Birdman" he enjoyed hunting with friends and rock collecting in Big Bend. All who knew him will miss his easygoing ways and unique sense of humor.
He is survived by his son, Lee Bird of Los Angles, CA, his son's mother, Jenny Lou Bird of Rayville, LA, his mother, Darlene Head of Anna Maria, FL, sisters Dr. Karen Teston and Susan Jacoby of Lakeland, FL, and brother, Chris Bird of Gainesville, FL. Ricky was predeceased by his father, Dr. James Bird and his sister Ginger Griggs, both of Lakeland, FL.
A celebration of Ricky's life will be held at 11am, July 6 at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home at Glenn Abbey, Auburndale, FL.
