WINTER HAVEN - Robert Rhodes, a resident of Winter Haven for over 30 years, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, with his daughter by his side. He had recently celebrated his 91st birthday with family from Michigan and enjoyed a very special day.
His wife of 37 years, Dorothy, predeceased him in March of this year. He is survived by one brother, Raymond (Illinois), and his children Dorothy & Kip (Michigan), Elizabeth & Doug (Texas), Paul & Beth (Michigan), David (Mich-igan), who predeceased him in 2006, Nancy & Steven (Michigan), and John & Melissa (Arizona). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Bob was born in Illinois to Alfred and Lillian Rhodes, but grew up in Indiana. He was a World War II Navy veteran. After the war, he attended and graduated with honors from Michigan State University. He did his graduate studies at Wayne State University. He was a small business owner and lived in Michigan until he retired and moved to Florida. Bob was very active in community affairs and had many interests. He enjoyed good books and music. He was able to recite poetry into his 90s. Bob had a sense of humor that was appreciated by all of those around him.
Per Robert's wishes, his services were private and he is laid to rest at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, next to his wife. A memorial service is planned for later in August.
The family wishes to say a special thank you to all the wonderful staff at Sterling House, the Home Instead caregivers, and Good Shepherd Hospice for their loving care of Bob.
Memorial contributions in Bob's memory can be made to: The Wounded Warrior Project: P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS., 66675.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
Crisp-Coon Funeral Home, Winter Haven.
