WINTER HAVEN - On June 11, 2013, Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Palmore, age 89, died peacefully at his home after a valiant battle with cancer.
Born February 16, 1924, in Chesterfield, VA, to Marvin A. and Mae E. Palmore.
He was predeceased by his parents and sisters Marvel, Virginia and Frances; and brothers Marvin Jr. (Sonny), and Bennett. He is survived by his loving companion Veda Lameck, his former wife Dolores "Dee" Palmore; his five children: Dick Palmore of Salisbury, NC, Denny Palmore of St. George, Utah, Bonnie Palmore Sheltrown (Roger) of Meridan, ID, Jennie Palmore Inge (Gerald) of South Hill, VA, and Deborah Palmore Stroud (Ross) of South Hill, VA. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
After graduating high school, Woody enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he served as a Radioman aboard the USS Intrepid. After serving his country for four years, he had a varied career with several utility companies in the west. He then returned to Richmond, VA, where he worked for the City of Richmond Power Co. After retiring from the city, he lived happily on Towles Creek leading into the Chesapeake Bay. He was an avid fisherman and golfer, and enjoyed boating. These were pursuits that he continued to enjoy after relocating to Florida.
He served many years as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. He and Veda enjoyed being members of Hope Presbyterian Church.
At Woody's request, there will be no funeral service. He has requested cremation with his ashes being scattered in the Chesapeake Bay at a later date.
