ALBERTO RUTLEDGE Obituary
ALBERTO RUTLEDGE EDINBURG - Alberto Rutledge, 96, died on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Amara Hospice in Edinburg. He was born at El Tule Ranch, west of Linn, Texas on February 10, 1918 and lived most of his life in Edinburg. He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1938. After being drafted in October 1941 into the US Army he served for the duration of WW II. After the war Alberto continued his education at Edinburg Junior College and completed his degree at The University of Texas - Austin graduating as a proud Longhorn, class of '54. He started teaching at Brewster School in Linn and completed his career at Travis Elementary School in Edinburg retiring after 30 years of service in 1985. He enjoyed his retirement years fishing on the Laguna Madre, travelling with his wife Josefina to visit his children and grandchildren, reading good literature and following his beloved Longhorn football team. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a gifted story teller with an exceptional memory for detail. Alberto is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Julia Garza Rutledge; his wife, Josefina Garcia Rutledge; four sisters, Irene, Isabela, Julia and Aurora Rutledge and four brothers, Manuel Jr., Elias, Guillermo and Nicolas Rutledge. Alberto is survived by his son, Major David A. Rutledge, USA (retired), and wife, Ouina of Edinburg; daughter, Gloria (Major Gerald, USMC, retired) Temple of Olympia, Washington; grandchildren, Alicia (Jean-François Smekens) Rutledge and Michael (Kristen Gantt) Rutledge; Alec and Shea Temple and great-grandchildren, Samantha and Owen Rutledge. The family thanks Dr. Andrew de la Garza and the staff at Family Medical Center – UT of McAllen along with the staffs of Edinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation and Amara Hospice for the dedication to and care of Alberto. In lieu of flowers please send donations to St. Vincent de Paul, St. Joseph Catholic Church, 114 W. Fay, Edinburg, TX 78539. A Vigil Service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 11th with a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12th.
