ANN PRESCOTT HOPKINS Obituary
ANN PRESCOTT HOPKINS Ann Prescott Hopkins, age 83, passed away in her sleep on Sunday, August 10, 2014, at Arden Courts in Austin, Texas. Ms. Hopkins was born March 4, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Dickinson College, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in 1953, and married her college sweetheart, Joseph A. Hopkins. Upon college graduation, Ms. Hopkins was a career school teacher while Mr. Hopkins worked for several corporations, teaching in Cincinnati, Ohio; Caracas, Venezuela; Janesville, Wisconsin; and Glenview, Illinois. The Hopkins family moved to McAllen in 1972, and Ms. Hopkins first taught at Travis Junior High School and later at McAllen Memorial High School, until she retired in 1987. A versatile teacher, Ms. Hopkins taught elementary through high school and subjects that included Spanish, English, and civics during her career. Extremely well liked, former students often returned to visit her. She and Mr. Hopkins were avid tennis players and dancers. Ms. Hopkins was one of the first volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates for children in the Rio Grande Valley. She served as a volunteer with Mujeres Unidas; Board member of Planned Parenthood; Chair of Family Selection and Board member of Rio Grande Habitat for Humanity; Secretary for Edinburg-McAllen League of Women Voters; and member of Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee to the McAllen City Commissioners. She loved all animals and could always be counted on to take in a stray. Survivors include her sister, Alice Sleasman, of Gainesville, Florida; daughter, Joanne P. Hopkins and her husband Joseph Gagen, of Austin, Texas; daughter, Tracy W. Hopkins and her husband David Turvene, of Arlington, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Charles and Jenna Gagen, and Helen and Alexander Turvene. Her husband predeceased her in 2006 after 53 years of marriage. No memorial service will be held in McAllen. Ms. Hopkins will be buried at Chester Rural Cemetery, Chester, Pennsylvania, with her husband. Obituary and memorial guestbook available online at www.wcfish.com.
