Obituary Condolences

APOLONIO PENA JR. RIO GRANDE CITY - Apolonio Peña, Jr., passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2012, after a long struggle with COPD. Apolonio was born in Falfurrias, Texas on May 18, 1937, but he lived most of his life in Rio Grande Ciy, where his ancestors settled in the mid 1800's. Apolonio was educated in Rio Grande City's catholic and public schools, and he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He met his lifelong partner and spouse, Irma Alaniz of San Isidro, soon after leaving the Air Force, and they were married on October 6, 1961. Apolonio received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Texas Pan American and taught mathematics from 1969 to 1992 in both the junior high and high schools in Rio Grande City. He was preceded in death by his parents Apolonio and Luisa Vela, and by his brothers Rene and Rene Emilio. He is survived by his wife Irma of Rio Grande City; daughter Maria Isabel of Boston, Massachusetts; son Jose Fernando of New York, New York; son Jorge Francisco (Cristina) of Mission and his sons Joaquin Apolonio and Diego Roberto; sister Osbelia Peña Boone of Bullard, Texas and her children Herbert Berry, Martha Kye, Kenneth Ray, Theresa Mae, and Alan Dale; and his nephew, Jesus Alberto, son of Rene Emilio, of Rio Grande City. Visitation will be held today, January 1, 2012 at Hernandez Chapel of Peace, 701 E. Eisenhower St., Rio Grande City, Texas, from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a rosary recited at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held January 2, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Interment will immediately follow at Rio Grande City Cemetery.
