Obituary Condolences

Ignacio Guerra Jr., ED.D Obituary
IGNACIO GUERRA JR., ED.D Ignacio Guerra Jr. of 76 years from Mercedes, TX entered the paradise of eternal rest with his Heavenly Father on February 27, 2014 in McAllen, surrounded by loved ones. Ignacio was a son to Ignacio Guerra & Ella Treviño Guerra. He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Heron Ricardo Guerra and Norma Alicia Guerra. He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Minerva Gutierrez Guerra; his children, Dr. Omar Guerra (Brenda), Ignacio Guerra III (Dolores) and Dr. Myra Guerra Santos (Miguel); brothers, Norbert Guerra (Nilsa) and Xavier L. Guerra (Mercy); his dear friend Luis and his thirteen grandchildren whom he loved immensely: Omar, Zachary, Jacob, Alexander, Andrew, Nicholas, Logan, Jake, Ignacio IV, Valerie, Antonio, Alessandra, and Andrés. Ignacio served in the armed forces stationed at Fort Polk, LA in the 49th Lone Star Armored Division. Their motto "Rarin' to go" was engrained in his heart and exemplified by his life: always eager to give himself entirely to the service of others and to stand for righteousness. He was a life-long educator who worked initially as a teacher and counselor, earning his Master's in Education from Pan American University and his Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Houston. Ignacio was a consultant for the Texas Education Agency in Austin, and later a Superintendent of Schools for Donna ISD. Additionally, he served as Administrator for the Texas Juvenile Detention Center in Edinburg and Associate Professor at the University of Texas Pan American. His professional accomplishments were numerous, but none that topped his spirit of service and his example of personal humility; he empowered people and impacted the lives of so many friends and colleagues throughout his career. Ignacio retired to love his grandchildren and care for his ailing sister. He died the way he lived, putting others before himself and offering his illness until the very end for those in need of God's grace. He was a loving husband to his wife of 51 years, a friend and confidant to his children and in-laws, and an inspiration to all whose lives he touched. He lived a dignified and righteous life seeking to honor his Creator in whose arms he now rests. Visitation will be Monday, March 3, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. at Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco. Funeral Mass will be on March 4, 2014 at 2 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment to follow at Highland Memorial Park. Military graveside services will be conducted by Sgt. Benito Alaniz V.F.W. Post # 7473 of Elsa, Tx. The Guerra Family appreciates the kindness shown by so many people who knew Ignacio Guerra Jr. and extends their heartfelt gratitude to a community of faith that united and remained steadfast in prayer.
