JOE JEROME PEREZ JR. Obituary
JOE JEROME PEREZ JR., PH.D. Joe Jerome Perez, Jr., Ph.D., 48, passed away Dec. 14, 2012 in Vienna, Austria after a long struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Claudia Pinzari Perez and two daughters, Giulia Angelica and Luisa Chiara, all of Rome, Italy. His parents, Joe J. Perez Sr., and Margot R. Perez of San Antonio, Texas also survive him. He was the grandson of Rodolfo N. Perez Sr., and Guadalupe M. Perez of Roma, Texas, and Leobardo Rodriguez, Sr., and Juanita M. Rodriguez of Edinburg, Texas, who all preceded him in death. Born on May 5, 1964 in Laredo, Texas, Dr. Perez graduated from McAllen High School in McAllen, Texas, earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Texas A&M University in College Station, and received a master's degree in mathematics at Tulane University in New Orleans. He earned his doctorate in mathematics at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., where he studied under the renowned mathematician, Dr. Mikhail Shubin. At the time of his death, Dr. Perez was working as a research mathematician at the University of Vienna. He traveled a great deal, working with colleagues from universities in many parts of Europe as well. "Conversations with Joe were never dull," said a remembrance posted on the University of Vienna's complex analysis website, http://www.univie.ac.at/complexanalysis/. "He was always able to surprise with unexpected comments and insights. He was intense not only in his work, but also in his attitude towards life." Joe was an avid hiker as well and shared his love for the outdoors with his beloved family and friends. One of his favorite mountains, the breathtaking Mont Blanc in the Italian Alps, was his home away from home. "He was an exceptional individual, somebody with many layers of complexity and sophistication and brilliance to light up our galaxy and beyond," said his friend, Nicholas Antoniou of Boston, Mass., in a blog - http://joejperezmemorial.blogspot.com/ - created in memory of Dr. Perez. His parents, Joe Sr. and Margot Perez, will miss their incredible son. "I admired my son so much, not only for his great sense of humor, but also for the intensity with which he did everything, whether it was his work or play," said his mother, Margot Perez, who lived in Vienna for more than a year to give love and support to her only child. "He had the capacity to make life-long friends of strangers on the first meeting. Joey will always be in my heart and his spirit will be with me forever." A memorial Mass, called "A Celebration of Life," will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 19, 2013 at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Roma, Texas. Cremation and memorial services were held in Vienna, Austria and in Boston, Mass., earlier this month. Interment will be in South Texas. Condolences can be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Joe J. Perez, Sr., P.O. Box 34196, San Antonio, Texas, 78265-4196. Sign the guest book at www.themonitor.com/obituaries
