JOSE VELA Jr. Obituary
JOSE VELA JR. WESLACO - Our loving father and husband, Jose Vela Jr., 84, and lifetime Weslaco resident, passed on October 31, 2012 in his home surrounded by his family. Jose was a World War II veteran who served in Germany and continued his dedication to military service as a member of VFW Post 8563 and Catholic American Legion. He started his early career at Pepsi-Cola and was a long term employee at the Continental Can Company, from 1962-88, where he was a member of the United Steelworkers of America. He retired in 1988. Dedicated to his church and faith, Jose was an active member of San Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Weslaco where he served as an usher, conducting administrative duties and as a Christmas pageant actor. Joe, as known to his family and friends was a self-taught musician who played the accordion, keyboard and harmonica. He would create lyrics without writing a note and burst into singing. He loved baseball and was a softball team member of the Gulf Distributing Company. He also enjoyed drawing, watching birds while singing in the swing he built, and viewing Spanish novelas with his loving wife and sister. He loved the outdoors, whether he was fishing, gardening or working around his home as a handyman. He typically was working on several projects at a time. He continues his work as a builder as he told our little brother Michael, "I built you a home here on Earth and I will be building a home for my family in Heaven". Joe is loved for his selfless nature, humor and pearls of wisdom. We learned much from our dad's advice and will carry these words in our hearts: "Keep up the good work", "Keep your nose clean", and end by saying, "That's all I have to say". His family for his commitment and love, faith, integrity, moral compass and standing up to injustices cherishes Joe. Joe is preceded in death by his father, Jose Vela Sr.; mother, Angelita P. Vela; sister, Juanita Mendes; and granddaughter, Gaudalupe Conception Vela. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maria Guadalupe Bautista Vela, whom he married on January 27, 1952; Acencion Betancourt from Ridley, CA, his only surviving sibling. Joe was blessed with eight children, daughters, Rosalinda Vela DeCosmo of Boca Raton, FL, Diana Vela Mohr of Dallas, TX and Irma Gardner of Weslaco; sons, Jose Vela III, Ramon Vela, Ricardo Vela, Ruben Vela, all of Weslaco and Michael Vela of Dallas, TX; 12 grandchildren, Shaw n Elliot, Steven Gardner, Carlos Vela, Cassandra Gardner, Alejandro Vela, Christopher Andrew Tisdell, Brittany Paige Tisdell, Jose Rolando (J.R.) Vela, Danny Vela, Veronica Marie Vela, Hillary Anne Tisdell and Gaudalupe Conception; and one great-grandchild, Jesus Alejandro Vela Regalado. Additional survivors include his sons-in-law, Bob DeCosmo, Robert Mohr and Dennis Gardner; daughters-in-law, Sandra Vela, Enna Vela and Susana Vela; and grandchildren-in-law, Arlene Cantu, Christina Oliva and Jeanette Vela. Visitation will be held today, Friday, November 2, 2012 from 3:00 pm to 9pm, with a rosary at 7:00 pm at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.
