Reverend Joe Griffith

ELYRIAl Beloved Pastor, husband, father, and friend to all, has gone to be with the Lord. The Rev. Joe Garneal Griffith, 83 of Elyria, was born May 9, 1931 in Robbins, TN and completed his journey on May 6, 2014 in Avon Lake, OH.

He was living proof that "God is still in the miracle business". He fought various illnesses before receiving his last and greatest miracle: total healing in Heaven with Jesus Christ.

Bro. Joe was a corporal in the US Army and served in the Korean War as part of the Fighting Red Devils. He also served the Lorain County Deaf Association.

Bro. Joe fell in love with the Lord at a revival at the 9th Street Church of God in Elyria and shortly thereafter, accepted his call into the full time ministry. He was ordained in 1966 and served as Senior Pastor at churches in Elyria, Bloomingdale, Fremont, Rittman, OH and Pekin, IL. He spent over 35 years in the ministry with his most recent position as founder and Senior Pastor of First Community Church of God in Lorain.

Bro. Joe's heavenly home-going reunited him with his parents: Sudley and Charity (Sexton) Griffith; sisters: Ozel Clark, Evalie Matney, Jean Gray; brothers Zenal and Zethra Griffith; and numerous other family, friends, and former congregations' members.

Bro. Joe's memory will live on through his loving wife of 61 years, Camilia "Faye" Griffith; children: Garry Griffith of Elyria, David and Karen (Swartz) Griffith of Vickery; Darlene and Garry Fister of Manito, IL; Theresa and Bill Saganes of Medina; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. He and Faye opened their home to their extended family: Sally Bowen, Gail Douthitt, and David Lay.

We will celebrate Bro. Joe's life through visitation on Monday, May 12, from 3-6pm at First Community Church of God in Lorain with the funeral service immediately following at 6pm. Rev. Garry Griffith and Steve Carney officiating. Full military burial for the family will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 2:30pm at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Community Church of God, 1330 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Lorain, OH 44053.

Arrangements are in the care of Wyers Funeral Chapel of Elyria.
