HURON: Lewis A. Nitschke, 85, of Huron, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 26, 2014 in his home.
He was born September 8, 1928, in Fremont, the son of Helmuth and Elizabeth (Kallat) Nitschke. He was a graduate of Fremont Ross High School and retired after a long career with New Departure Hyatt, a division of General Motors. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and also the UAW Retirees. He enjoyed traveling and was very fond of the large tomato plants he grew.
Lewis is survived by his son, Martin (Recell), of Texas; grandchildren, Tiffany (Mark) Bittenbender, Jessica (Joe) Keck and Raymond (Karen) and Ryan Nitschke; great-grandchildren, Sophie, Reid, Sean and Alexis; two brothers, Edwin of Fremont and Gene of South Dakota; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends, including his special friend Ophelia Durso.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Phyllis, who died July 31, 2011, preceded him in death, as well as two sons, Roderick and Stephen, a sister, Alma Riechard and a brother, Albert.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 5-8pm in Toft Funeral Home, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 10am until time of services at 11am in Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
