Thomas R. Byers

FREMONT: Thomas R. Byers, 79, of Fremont, OH passed away at home on Sunday, March 30, 2014. He was born August 19, 1934 in Fremont, the son of Edward and Loretta (Dutt) Byers.

He was a 1952 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. Tom served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from February 3, 1953 to February 2, 1956 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He married Joan M. Bender on April 19, 1958 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Fremont and she survives.

Tom worked in the Maintenance Department at Ludlow Corporation for over thirty-five years until he retired in 1997. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and a Life member of VFW Post #2947. Tom enjoyed bowling, baseball and golf. He was an avid NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt fan and a sports fan, especially the Detroit Lions, Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Red Wings. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Tom is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan M. Byers, Fremont, OH; children, Debra (Scott) Wilfong, Gary Byers, Annette (Butch) Hossler and Wendy (Matt) Hoffman, all of Fremont, OH, Chuck (Liz) Byers, New Hope, MN; grandchildren, Sarah Byers, Matthew Byers, Katherine Byers, Justin Hossler, Aaron Hossler and Haley Hoffman; siblings, Dolores Edwards, Clyde, OH, Phyllis (Leon) Fisher, Beverly Bittigar both of Fremont and Faye (Jim) King of North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Forest Seiple; siblings, Edward "Dude" Byers, Frank Byers, Glenda Dodson and Margaret Blechinger.

Visitation: Wednesday from 2 pm - 8 pm with a Vigil at 7:30 pm at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St, Fremont, OH. Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, April 3, 2014, 10:30 am at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1021 W. State St, Fremont, with Fr. Michael Zacharias officiating. Burial: St. Ann Cemetery, Fremont with Military Honors provided by the VFW and American Legion.
