Carl "Dinky" Denver Batey Obituary Carl Batey, 84, was born on March 15, 1929 in Wisner, Louisiana, and passed away on April 29, 2013, at his residence. He was a life-long resident of Wisner, Louisiana, and an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Batey, a retired farmer, also worked as a boat pilot and agricultural engineer during his career. He was founder, owner, and administrator of Mary Anna Nursing Home in Wisner, LA. Mr. Batey was well-known throughout the community as a business entrepreneur and philanthropist. He earned a degree in Agricultural Engineering from Louisiana State University (LSU) as well as an educational degree in math and physics from Northeast LA. Community College prior to becoming Northeast LA. University (ULM).

Known by friends and loved ones as "Dinky," he will be remembered for his zest for life, great story-telling, and passion for various causes. He was an active leader of the Farm Boycott Movement in the 1970's in Washington, D. C., and a candidate for State Representative in 1979 and 1990. He was an honorary member of the DP Men's Club and formerly a member of the Lion's Club. While in recent years an active member of First Baptist Church of Wisner, Mr. Batey also was a former member and Sunday School teacher at Holly Grove Baptist Church. He enjoyed music and dancing, especially the Gene King Band. Known by his friends and family for his love of scrap iron, Mr. Batey was affectionately dubbed "the scrap iron king.'

Mr. Batey was preceded in death by his parents, Madison Casey Batey & Anna Lee Hoggatt Batey; two sisters, Letha Lee Beach & Loraine ("Buck") Quimby; and two grandsons, Daniel Batey & Hunter Haring.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Carroll Looney-Batey of Wisner, LA; former wife and mother of his children, Mary Ferrington of Wisner, LA; one son, Mark Batey of Wisner, LA; two daughters, Candy Sanders (Spouse-Mark) of Monroe, LA & Holly Haring (Spouse-Carl) of Wisner, LA; and daughter-in-law, Paula Batey of Wisner, LA; two step-children, Connie Cassels (Spouse-Tony) of Eros, LA & Chad Looney (Spouse-Amanda) of Monroe, LA; 6 granddaughters, Angela Beasley (Spouse-Damon) of Broken Arrow, OK, Rachel Batey of Shreveport, LA, Lindsey Henry (Spouse-Jason) of Monroe, LA, Kelly Haring of Wisner, LA, Maddie Haring of Wisner, LA, and Hannah Sharp (Spouse-Jonathan) of Wisner, LA; one grandson, Addison Sanders of Monroe, LA; 5 great grandchildren, Lauren & Connor Beasley of Broken Arrow, OK, Amelia Wooten of Shreveport, LA, and Isaac & Liam Sharp of Wisner, LA; 8 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great grandchildren; and his brother, Dallas Batey (Spouse-Joyce) of Wisner, LA. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers include: Addison Sanders, Jason Henry, Jonathan Sharp, Nathan Oliver, Damon Beasley, and John McLemore. Honorary Pallbearers include: Jake Wyrick, Leslie Sproles, Ed McKee, Bill McLemore, D. D. Smith, and the members of the Andrew Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church of Wisner, LA.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 1st from 5:00pm-8:00pm at Young's Community Memorial Funeral Home in Winnsboro, LA. Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 2nd at 10:00am at First Baptist Church of Wisner with the Rev. Thomas Peoples officiating. Interment following at Holly Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Hwy. 562, Wisner, LA., under the direction of Young's Community Memorial Funeral Home, Winnsboro, LA In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made at, at "Donate Now" to assist wounded soldier and their families.
