Richard Swaggart Obituary

Richard Harry Swaggart

A Funeral Mass for Richard Harry Swaggart will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 29, 2016, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, with Rev. James Moran officiating. Visitation will be at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, LA, from 4:30 until 6:00 PM, Friday, October 28, 2016, with the Rosary and Wake Service led by Deacon Scott Brandle at 6:00 PM.

Harry Swaggart was a lifelong member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, serving as an usher for many years, taking pleasure in opening the doors for early morning masses and his membership in the Knights of Columbus.

During his life-time he and his first wife turned a garage into a grocery, employing family and friends, he served in the Army, he was a beekeeper, he parented three children, ran for public office, he raised cattle and chickens, he built his own home in his 60's, he eloped with his second wife in his 90's, he proudly drove his tractor until almost 100, and kept his drivers' license until last year.

He is survived by his daughter, Theresa Nell Gentry of Monroe, LA; and eleven grandchildren, Kathy Perry (Gene Hightower), Alisa Lear (Bernie), John Sims (Karyn), Joey Swaggart (Debbie), Mark Sims (Stephenie), Kenny Swaggart (Shalia), Debbie Meeks (Sidney), Tommie Swaggart, Stacie Retzlaff (Jon), Howard Smith (Kim), and Stacie Ambrose (Bobby); nieces, Jan Mart and Mary Frances Warren. There are 19 great grandchildren and 26 great-great grandchildren; and great nieces and nephews.

Mr. Swaggart is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Hents and Nellie Choat Swaggart; his wives, Annie Mae Bres Swaggart and Maglene Lenard Swaggart; his sister, Kate Swaggart King; his sons, Richard Joseph, Sr., and Kenneth Glen Swaggart. Grandchildren and great grandchildren preceded him in death also.

The family's gratitude goes out to Kim and Sharon at Landmark Nursing Center and the staff of Louisiana Hospice for their care the last three months. To Dr. David Yarbrough, we thank you for accepting watermelons for payment from a man who remembered how it "used to be".

You may send flowers or food, this family enjoys both. The only memorial requested is a prayer, and you go forward with kindness and courtesy. The kindness and courtesy of Rodney, Tommie Jean and Carl made it possible for Harry to live in his own neighborhood for many years.
