Donald C. Berray, 86, of Redgranite and Madison, WI passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home at King, WI of complications from pneumonia. He was born January 4, 1928, in Chicago, the son of C. Karl Berray and Gertrude Smith.
Don served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Wake Island during World War II, worked as a Firefighter for the Madison Fire Department from 1951 to 1964. He also worked at Gilson Electronics in Middleton. Don was a commercial artist and ran his own screen printing business for many years. Later, Don volunteered as a Fire Dispatcher in Redgranite, and at Juliette Manor and Berlin Hospital. Don loved small animals and children. He was something of a tinkerer, and in his spare time, he carved beautiful wood statues, dabbled in farming, gardening, and maple syrup making.
Don is survived by his children: Conni Berray, of Kauai, Hawaii; Jeanne Vilberg (Tom) of Knox, Pennsylvania; Dean Berray of Sun Prairie; Michael Berray (Sally) of Madison; Chuck Berray (Tracy) of Oshkosh; and nine step-children: Angie Pfahning; Joleen Juslen; Heidi Schwanz; Jane, Dolly, Russ, Jim, John, and Randy Cline;12 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his father, Karl, his mother, Gertrude, his wife Margaret (Aaberg), his son, Bruce Berray, and his stepson, Billy Cline. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Veteran's Home at King for their loving care and support, as well as a special thank you to all the folks at the coffee shops Don loved in Redgranite.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 14 at 1 p.m. at the Main Chapel at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home in King, WI, with a visitation at 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wautoma Humane Society. Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
