Capt. Lawrence T. Esser, 94, of Oshkosh, died on Monday, March 18, 2013 at Lakeshore Manor. He was born on December 12, 1918 in Milwaukee the son of Peter and Elizabeth Mand Esser. Larry married Clara Stahle on September 12, 1942 in Junction City, KS. Clara preceded him in death on July 9, 1996. Larry married Germaine "Gerry" Nitz on November 2, 2002 in Oshkosh.
Lawrence was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Amvets Post 7, and a manager at Mercury Marine until his retirement. He was a WWII Army veteran serving in the 9th Armored Division. After his discharge from the army he joined the Wisconsin National Guard. Larry had been a Boy Scout Leader. He loved traveling around the country by car, and camping.
Survivors include his wife Gerry; son Peter (Kim) Esser of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Jodi (John) Bunks of Appleton, Jason (Cindy) Umbreit of North Fond du Lac, Kyle Esser of Seattle; great grandchildren, Cassandra, John, Jena, Logan, Reece, and Alex. Larry is further survived by stepsons, Michael (Colleen) Nitz of Van Dyne, Steven (Mary) Nitz and Tom Nitz both of Oshkosh; step daughters, Annmarie (Keith) Simmons of Waukau, Donna (Mike) Perry of Oakfield, Cynthia (Mauro) Martinez of Oshkosh; 14 step grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; many brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. Larry was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Umbreit.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home (Westside) with the Rev. John Worzala Dumke officiating. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Inurnment in Lake View Memorial Park will follow.
