Robert Leland Johnson Retired Firefighter Robert Leland Johnson passed away at his home in Tenino, WA on Wednesday October 9, 2013. Robert was born December 30, 1955 to Robert and Opal (Barnes) Johnson in Sioux City, Iowa. Robert was raised in Glendora, Calif. and graduated from Glendora High School in 1974. On July 15, 1978 he married the love of his life, Kathy Lynne Miller in West Covina, Calif. She survives him at the family home. He served in the U.S. Army 1975-1979. Following his enlistment in the Army he attended Bates Technical School for fire training and volunteered at Summit South Hill. 1981-1984 he worked at the Bangor Submarine Base Fire Dept. He then went to Olympia Fire Dept. January 1, 1984 and retired as a Lt. Firefighter on October 12, 2011. He had served as Fire Commissioner for Southeast Thurston Fire Authority. Robert had also served as a volunteer firefighter for Yelm/Rainer for 10 years. He also coached little league for many years while his son Bryan was growing up. He enjoyed fishing for salmon, steelhead, and tuna. He loved spending time with his friends, family, and especially his granddaughters. In addition to his loving wife Kathy, he is survived by his two sons, Bryan R. and Clayton D. Johnson both of Olympia; brother, Rodney L. Johnson of Las Vegas NV; sisters, Lindy Waters, Roxy Frederick, and Rhonda Lee all of Hesperia, Calif.; His granddaughters, who were a special joy in his life, Sofia Lynne Johnson age 20 mo. and LeaAnna Kay Iverson, 3 yrs. both of Bucoda, WA. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Calvary Chapel, located at 919 Division St. NW, Olympia WA. Reception to follow.
