Ross Gordon Kincaid Ross Gordon Kincaid passed away peacefully in Palm Desert, California on January 2, 2013 at age 100, surrounded by his loving family. Ross was born on May 23, 1912 in Naches, near Yakima, Washington to John Gordon Kincaid and Harriet Pearl (Ross) Kincaid. The Kincaids and his mother's family, the Rosses, were pioneers in the Yakima Valley. He graduated from Yakima High School (now Davis High) in 1930 and attended Yakima Valley Junior College (as it was then called in its first year of existence). He was a Staff Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Washington Volunteer Infantry, Washington State Guard from 1941 to 1945. Ross spent 43 years in the lumber and building material business, retiring in 1976 as Executive Director of the Western Building Material Association, a 5-state trade association of retail lumber dealers in the Northwest now based in Olympia, WA. He championed education and training for young people in the industry, and the WBMA's Kincaid Learning Center is dedicated to his legacy. Following retirement he and Seldon VanderWegen, a CPA, presented management and sales training seminars throughout the western U.S. and Canada for 7 years. Ross was a former member of First United Methodist Church in Olympia, Olympia Rotary Club, and the Olympia Country & Golf Club. He was a past president and Member Emeritus of the Washington State Senior Golf Association, past president of Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club, Union, WA, past president of the Optimist Club in Yakima, and Past Exalted Ruler of the Yakima Elks Lodge #318 and Life Member of the Olympia Elks Lodge. He was a current member of Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church. For much of his life he was involved in service to the Boy Scouts of America. Ross loved golf, travel and people. He had a remarkable gift for making others feel special through his amazing compassion, warmth and sense of humor. Legendary good times were had wherever Ross hung his hat, whether at his Hood Canal, WA vacation home, in Kauai, Sedona, cruising the San Juan Islands, or in his beloved Coachella Valley, always surrounded by good friends and family. Ross was married to Gladys Karoline (Strom) Kincaid for 56 years until her passing in 2002. He is survived by his loving spouse Doreen Edwards of Palm Desert, CA; his sons David Kincaid of Hemet, CA, Michael Kincaid of Katy, TX, Keith Kincaid of Palm Springs, CA and Kyle Kincaid of Port Orchard, WA; along with 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Ross's family would like to recognize his caregiver, Bonifacio Ayroso, for the wonderful, loving and attentive care he gave during Dad's last few years which made his life so comfortable. We would also like to recognize Carolyn Porsch-Gottlieb of Family Hospice Care in Palm Springs for the caring service she provided to Dad. They are angels among us. Ross will be laid to rest at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, Yakima, WA following a private graveside service later this year. In memory of Ross, tax-deductible contributions may be made to the Western Building Material Association's Educational Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 1699, Olympia, WA 98507, or
