Darrel Akers, 66, of Vacaville, passed away after a long illness on Saturday, Aug. 6, at his home. He was born in Norman, Okla., on Nov. 21, 1944.
Darrel was the editorial cartoonist for the Vacaville Reporter for 38 years. He also worked as an Naval designer for Sperry-Rand/Unisys for 12 years, a Naval architecture technician at Mare Island for eight years, and with Air Police and Administration for the Air Force for four years. He was a co-creator of Theatre Machine in 1973. He wrote scripts, performed, produced and directed theater productions. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Elks Club, Rotary and Chamber of Commerce.
Darrel received numerous awards, including: Editorial Cartoons, Good Citizenship, Elks Association Meritous Service, Better Newspaper Contests, ARTY, Rotary Perfect Attendance for two years, Public Service Certificate-Lions Club, Citizens for Law and Order, Best Editorial Cartoons, seven-time Elk of the Month, and many others.
Darrel is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jo Ann Akers; daughters, Sandra Souza and Christine Swetland; mother, Rosemary Akers; sister, Cynthia Leanne Akers; brother, Gary DeWayne (Jesse) Akers; three grandchildren, Carlee Akers, David Souza, and Matthew Souza; two step-grandchildren, Thayer Swetland and Cherish Swetland; and his best friend, John Maes. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Akers.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug. 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. at McCune Garden Chapel. A funeral will be held Monday, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Vacaville with Pastor Bob Willse officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Darrel L.
