Nelson Max Allen Obituary
July 25, 1931 - July 19, 2014

Nelson Max Allen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away on July 19, at the age of 82, after fighting a valiant battle with cancer.

Nelson was born in 1931 in Cortland County Hospital, New York. He attended Cortland High School and graduated in 1950. He then joined the United States Air Force on March 12, 1951. In 1953 he went to Sembach Air Force base in Germany. This is where he met his first wife, Renate Fritz. They had two children; Terry and Randy Allen. After serving in the Air Force for 25 years, he ended his career as a Distinguished Senior Master Sgt at Travis Air Force Base.

He immediately went to work for Ball Metal where he worked for 20 years, until 1996.

On Aug. 5, 1983, he married his second wife and soul mate, Gwen Schultz Allen. With Gwen, he inherited another daughter, Michelle Stanley, who he loved as his own daughter. Gwen and Nelson had a remarkable marriage that lasted over 30 years. You could always see the love that they had for one another by looking into their eyes.

He never knew the word retirement. It took him a few weeks of leisure time after Ball Metal before realizing how much he missed contributing and he started installing real estate signs for Kappel and Kappel Realtors. At the same time, he started Over the Hill Lawn Service. He continued to be a hard worker until he became ill in June of 2012 at 81.

Nelson was always the life of the party and he enjoyed spending time with all of his many friends. He loved travelling, bowling, fishing, darts, horseshoes, square dancing, RV'ing, Nascar, golf, cribbage, pinochle, but most of all spoiling his wife and family. He loved excitement so he started racing boats. They did however, relax during the summer up at Snowflower with their RV and family. You could always expect a smile and a joke from him. He will be missed so very much by his family and friends. And of course, by the national cruise lines, whom Nelson, Gwen and their friends kept in business from spending so much time there.

Nelson is preceded in death by his parents, Nora Marie Lewis Allen and George Orman Allen.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen Allen; son, Randy Allen; son-in-law, James Stanley; daughters, Terry Volker and Michelle Stanley; grandchildren, Kai Volker, Chris Stanley, Deanna Allen, Ryan Stanley, Oliver Volker and Natalie Allen; great-grandchildren, Payton Stanley and Jayden Allen; and Reneta Allen, mother of Randy and Terry and many other beloved friends and family.

He will be missed by so many people but most of all his wife, Gwen Allen. He was the love of her life.

A committal service with full military honors will be held on Monday, July 28, at 3 p.m., at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Rd., Dixon. A reception will follow at the Veteran's Hall 548 Merchant St., Vacaville. Arrangements under the care of Fairfield Funeral Home 707-425-1041.
