Jan. 22, 1944 - April 23, 2014

William Kirkland, Jr. was born Jan. 22, 1944 in Bamberg, S.C. to Juanita Ray Kirkland and the late William Kirkland, Sr. He was called to be with God on April, 23.

He passed peacefully in his sleep, in Los Angeles, CA, while visiting his daughter and grandson.

In 1961, William joined the United States Air Force and served overseas for nine years before returning to the states. It was in the Air Force that William was given the nickname "Kirk" (short for Kirkland).

In 1970, he married Patricia Anne Smalls and they, along with their two children, Darren Keith and Kelli LaTese, moved to Loring Air Force Base, Maine and eventually to Travis Air Force Base, CA. Kirk served his country proudly and honorably for 21 years before retiring from active duty.

Kirk was a member of Chapel Three on Travis Air Force Base (which eventually became Chapel One) for many years before moving to Fairfield, and joining True Love Baptist Church in 2009. One of Kirk's proudest moments was becoming a Deacon at True Love. With a love for The Lord and an unwavering faith in Jesus, Kirk set out on a mission to spend every day working to be more like Christ.

Kirk was a man of few words, but the words he spoke were powerful, poignant and purposeful. He was intelligent and curious and enjoyed lively debates on history, politics, economics and current events. He loved to watch a great game and have a good laugh and regardless of any obstacles placed in his path, he always found a reason to give thanks to God. No matter when or where you would see Kirk, he had a kind word to say or a hug to give. He loved his family and God more than anything in the world. He lived a life of passion, integrity, kindness, generosity and humility. To know Kirk was to love him.

He leaves behind his wife, Patricia Kirkland; mother, Juanita Kirkland; sisters, Paulette Adrienne and Kim; son, Darren and daughter-in-law, Cyndi; daughter, Kelli; grandsons, Gabe and Apollo, and a host of neices, nephews, cousins and friends.

Please join the Kirkland family in honoring the life of our beloved William Kirkland, Jr. "Kirk".
