HERRIN - Cornelius "Neil" Royal Biteler, 81, died at 11:40 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2013, in Century Assisted Living in Carbondale.

He was born Oct. 22, 1931, in Flint, Mich., to Royal Cornelius and Maude (Johnson) Biteler. He married Jean Elaine Moyer Sept. 27, 1958, and she survives.
Neil graduated from Purdue University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for GTE in North Lake.
Survivors include his wife, Jean of Herrin; son, Mark C. Biteler of Herrin; daughter, Dawn C. Smolak (Sean) of Herrin; and two grandchildren, Paul Luke Smolak and Madelyn Jean Smolak.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Aaron; and an infant sister.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in Crain Funeral Home Egyptian Chapel in Energy with Mike Tarlton and Mark Biteler officiating. Interment will follow in Egyptian Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
