MURPHYSBORO - David A. Cochran Sr., 71, of Ava, passed away at 8:50 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at his residence.

David was born April 23, 1942, in Murphysboro to Oscar and Ruth (Schade) Cochran.

He loved to hunt and fish and go to flea markets. He had been a very avid bowler with the Moose Lodge Bowling League, but his greatest love was being with his kids and grandkids.

David had been a cable splicer with Verizon for more than 38 years. He and other retired co-workers attended the Thursday morning meetings to keep in touch.

Mr. Cochran was a U.S. Army veteran in the artillery during the Vietnam War.

David married Judy Fauss on Dec. 2, 1988, in Paducah, and she survives.

Other survivors include four children, Ruth Hoffecker of Murphysboro, David Cochran II and his wife, Kimberly Cochran, of Christopher, Scott Shannon and his wife, Erica Shannon, of Ava and Tracy Huffman and her husband, Kevin Huffman, of Murphysboro; eight grandchildren, Douglas Ridings, Michael Cochran, Edward Cochran, Vonda Cochran, Brittney Huffman, Brooklin Huffman, Allison Shannon and Baylee Huffman; one great-granddaughter, Vallorie Cochran; one nephew and his wife and son, Wade and April Cochran and Bryce Cochran, all of Robertsdale, Ala.; and two nieces, Starrlene Bradford and her husband, Josh Bradford, of Robertsdale, Ala., and Stacy Cochran of Jacksonville, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and two sisters.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro with the Rev. Paul Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park with military services conducted by American Legion Post 127, VFW Post 7190 and 2605 and Jackson County DAV Chapter 69. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.
