BENTON -Marsoen Elaine Moore Akin, 97, passed away Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, in Colville, Wash.

She was born Oct. 23, 1916, on a farm near Benton, daughter of Ralph and Grace Moore.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Phyllis Jenkins and her husband of 60 years William L. Akin of Murphysboro.
She is survived by her only child, William R. Akin and wife, Kristine; three grandchildren, Brian Akin, Craig Akin and Kathryn Marsoen Akin and two great-grandchildren.
Marsoen attended school in Benton through high school graduating in 1934. She received her bachelor's degree from SIU in 1939. She taught school in New Athens after graduation. After her marriage in 1942, she worked at Curtiss-Wright Aircraft in Saint Louis in the drafting department. In 1944, the family moved to South Bend, Ind., where she again taught school and also worked in a chemical plant in nearby Mishawaka. In 1953, the family moved to Michigan where she was employed at University of Michigan Research Center as an engineering aide. After moving Torrance, Calif., in 1957 she was employed by TRW Space Systems in Redondo Beach, again as an engineering aide. She retired after 22 years.
She and her husband traveled the world to Asia, Europe, East Africa, India and many places in the South Pacific. Gardening, cooking, loving her grandchildren and researching genealogy were her other interests. During her retirement years she completed her book Spring Settlement, which explores the early history of Franklin County, including her own pioneer ancestors.
