Arta Dian Dodge Worthy was born August 21, 1929 in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Millie McGonigle and Paul Joseph Dodge. She passed away in St. George, Utah on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 just two days short of her 85th birthday of causes incident to age.

Dian graduated from South Gate High School, South Gate, California in 1949. She continued her schooling at UCLA, earning BS and BA degrees in Elementary Education and a Life-time teaching certificate. She received a Masters of Education degree from Cal State with a 4-way major in English, Cultural anthropology, geography, and education.

She taught elementary school in the Los Angeles County area for 34 years. School assignments included Dunsmore Elementary, Paramont Elementary, and LaCresenta Elementary. After retirement, she worked part time doing special testing for ESOL students K through 12 grades.

On August 6, 1986 she married Granvil S. Worthy in Tujunga, California. The marriage was solemnized on August 7, 1987 in the Los Angles LDS Temple.

After living most of her life in Southern California, Dian and Granvil moved to St. George in 1996 where they spent many happy years living in Vista Ridge Estates. Granvil passed away February 14, 2006.

She was a member of the LDS Church and especially enjoyed teaching the Cultural Refinement lessons in Relief Society.

During the summer months, Dian would alternate taking college classes with traveling the world. She visited many countries, taking pictures, collecting art objects, jewelry, and especially dolls representing the different cultures of the world.

Dian is preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by a cousin, Doneta McGonigle Gatherum (Ralph), Doneta and Ralph's children and their grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the friends Dian made while living in St. George, especially Phyllis, Mary Ann, Scott, President Leavitt, Branch President of the Red Cliffs Second Branch of the LDS Church, and JoAnn Brooks, the Branch Relief Society President. Thank you to the medical personnel, especially the nurses who treated Dian with kindness and respect.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. George City Cemetery. A visitation will be held Friday, August 22, 2014 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah.
