Douglas Hillman Quayle passed away peacefully August 6, 2014 in St. George, Utah. Doug was born August 22, 1920 in Logan, Utah to Joseph and Mabel Quayle.
As a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force, Doug was the gunner of a B-27 in WWII. After being shot down, he spent time as POW in Germany. Doug attended and graduated from Utah State College with a degree in Agriculture. He married his sweetheart Betty Jean Klomp on September 2, 1947 at Betty's parents' home. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Doug's life in St. George began with a job at U&I Sugar in 1954. For 35 years he ran the St. George beet plant, which is now the original opera house. Doug was a long time member of the St. George Rotary Club, and as the Rotarian District Governor enjoyed traveling all over the world. In addition to traveling, Doug loved family vacations to Lake Powell where he displayed his excellent water skiing skills.
He was an active member of the LDS Church. He served in two bishoprics, assistant Ward clerk, Financial High Council and was an active High Priest.
Doug was the second to the oldest of nine children and is survived by his brother Don and baby sister Carol. He is also survived by his son Richard (Deb), son-in-law Dan Johnson (Billie), 10 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, his son Kris, his son Steve, his daughter Kathy, his parents and six siblings.
Funeral services will be Thursday, August 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. George 5 & 6 Ward LDS Chapel, 100 South 400 East. Viewings will be held Wednesday, August 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St. and at the Chapel on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., prior to services. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery.
