LaMar "Smokey" DeMille

Orderville, Utah

LaMar "Smokey" DeMille died Monday, January 28, 2013 in St. George, Utah. Born September 20, 1919 in Rockville, Utah to Margaret Lena Anderson and Conrad Ozro DeMille. At 4 years of age his family moved from Rockville to Orderville. Smokey attended school at Orderville and also helped his dad farm at Clear Creek up until the war. He served 4 years in the Army during WWII spending time in Sicily, North Africa, France, Italy, Germany, and finally Normandy France. He was very proud of his military service including his time as a truck driver and playing the bugle. After the war he returned home to Orderville and 1 week later he married Dorthy Tait in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Smokey worked as a cook in Dick's Café and The Big Hand Café in St. George and later at the coalmine in Glendale,UT. He also spent 2 years working on the Glen Canyon dam. But for most of his life he worked in the timber industry first for Croft Pierson sawmill cutting timber and later for the Whiting brothers on the Kaibab where he was an edgerman.

He loved music and played the guitar. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved doing his home teaching. Smokey was instrumental in remodeling the Mt. Carmel Cemetery and was very proud of the beautiful grass installed. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Leland DeMille, Wanda Bowers, Wallace DeMille, and Vonda DeMille. Survived by his wife Dorthy DeMille of Orderville, children, LaVee (Delin) Roundy of Panguitch, Gene L. (Toni) DeMille of Las Vegas, NV, and Peggy Ann (Ed) McDonald of Orderville, UT, siblings; John DeMille of Orderville, Loa Brinkerhoff of Washington, UT, and Helen Leavitt of Gunlock, UT, 12 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 1pm in the Orderville LDS Church with a viewing from 11:00 to 12:45. Burial in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Mosdell Mortuary.
