Lloyd Gillam Apple

March 23, 1935 - April 15, 2013

Lloyd G. Apple passed away at his residence in the City of Washington.

Lloyd was born on March 23, 1935 in Brawley, California to James William and Cuba Cleo Apple. He moved with his family as a boy to Imperial Beach, California.

Lloyd built a model airplane while a Boy Scout and was very proud of a knife he won for his efforts. While a teenager in San Diego he worked at an airport exchanging odd jobs for flying lessons. At the age of 16 he took a solo flight from San Diego to the Salinas Valley. His fascination with airplanes continued into adulthood.

Lloyd joined the Air Force in 1954. He served proudly as a jet engine mechanic, although his first flight on a jet was many years after leaving the service.

A blind date, which included a ride on a motorcycle and a visit to the San Diego Zoo, led to a 51 year romance. Lloyd married Charlotte Darlene Hill on June 17th, 1961.

Lloyd and family moved to the Salinas Valley and eventually settled in the small town of Prunedale, California. Throughout his life he built and flew radio controlled airplanes. A few he built from kits, but most were built from scratch. He joined the Salinas Area Modelers Club in Salinas, California.

Lloyd and Charlotte moved to Washington, Utah after his retirement as a Master Electrician for two Salinas Valley wineries. After moving to Washington Lloyd found and joined the local RC Club "Remote Possibilities" where he was known as the Foam King for the unique model airplanes he made from scratch using every form of foam he could find. He also belonged to an RC Discussion Group in the area.

Lloyd had always wanted to earn his Ham Radio Operators license and at the young age of 70+ he took a crash course in Morse Code with a dear friend and did in fact earn his license. He was a member of the Dixie Amateur Radio Club.

Lloyd is survived by his wife Charlotte Apple, his daughters Candi Swinscoe and Tammi Apple of Salinas, California. His Grandsons Derrick Wood of Queen Creek, AZ, Bill Anderson of Salinas, CA and proceeded in death by his grandson Brandon Phillips of Brigham City, UT. His grandaughters Kimberlee and Katelynn McKay of Salinas, CA. His Great-grandaughters Layla and Harmonee Phillips of Brigham City, UT and Shaylee Wood of Queen Creek AZ and his Great-grandson Kian Wood of Queen Creek, AZ. Lloyd was the oldest of eight children and is survived by his 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

There were no services per Lloyd's request.
