Wallace Kay Smith passed away peacefully in his home on Dec 9th at the age of 79. He was born Dec 4, 1934 in Cedar City, Utah to William Wallace and Mary Alice Smith. He graduated from Cedar High where he received the honor of first team All-State wrestling and football. He married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Rae Jones, on Sept 10, 1953. He graduated from Utah State University where he played football and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then served for three years in the U.S. Air Force including a tour of duty in Asia.
Early on, he worked at Lockheed Martin in California. When he returned to Cedar City, he joined Utah Power & Light until he retired in 1990. In addition to designing many power lines in southern Utah, he oversaw the development of the Blundell Geothermal Plant in Milford. He was active in the community serving in the Rotary as well as in local politics.
He had deep faith and served in many church callings including Bishop, Stake Presidency, Young Men's President several times (most recently in his 70's) and many others. He also served in the St. George Temple with Bonnie as coordinators. He was active in scouting and received the Silver Beaver award.
He approached life with confidence and faith. He was very resourceful, could fix anything and get out of any situation. He had a great love for his children and grandkids, who treasured going to the cows with him. You always felt safe and loved when you were with him. His favorite thing in the world was working with his cattle operation and his home away from home was the family ranch in Hay Canyon.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, two sisters Allison Bushnell (Van) and Donlee Simkins (Kenneth), 6 children-Patricia Frei (Dan), W. Bret Smith (Charise), J. Kirk Smith (Anne), LeAnn Leavitt (Dave), Vance K. Smith (Carrie), Stacey Marshall (Clay), 30 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Cedar 4th Ward Chapel (500 W 400 N) in Cedar City, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 from 5-7:00 pm at Southern Utah Mortuary and Saturday, December 14, 2013 from 9:30-10:30 am at the church. Interment will be in the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. Online condolences can be made at www.sumortuary.com.
