DOUGLAS DINGWALL McARTHUR Born June 21, 1942 on his parents' farm in Egremont Township, ON, Douglas Dingwall McArthur was the much-loved husband for 44 years of Margaret (née Donald); father, mentor and friend to Keith (Laura Williams), Fiona (Andrew Popov) and Stephanie; and storyteller, cuddler and grandpa to Connor, Bryson and Neva. He was the brother of John (Beverley Doran), Rod (Melanie) and Donna (Lloyd) Love; brother-in-law, uncle, great- uncle and cousin to the McArthur and Donald clans; and friend to all who knew him. Doug was a journalist who worked at the Hamilton Spectator and Southam, then for 19 years at The Globe and Mail, where he served as Assistant Travel Editor. He travelled the world extensively throughout his life, visiting more than 100 countries and shared his love of travel with his family and friends. Doug was a diarist, theatre buff, genealogist, hiker, birder, reader, newshound, photographer, poet, puzzler and punster. He died surrounded by his wife and children in the Palliative Care unit of Princess Margaret Hospital on April 23, 2014. His death leaves a hole that will never be filled. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 28th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Rd., Toronto. His funeral service will be held at the same location at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29th. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Bruce Trail Conservancy or Sleeping Children Around the World.
