JACK LAWRENCE NEWMAN WWII Veteran Retired Platoon Chief, Toronto Fire Department At a spry 91 years of age, with his daughters by his side, Jack Newman passed away peacefully at Etobicoke General Hospital on Friday, April 26, 2013. Beloved husband of the late Jean Newman (Watt). Loving father of daughters Margaret and her husband Ivan and Patricia and her husband Paul. Much loved grandfather of Jennifer, Richard and the late Drew. He will be greatly missed by his extended family of nieces and nephews and their children, as well as the many special friends he held close to his heart. Serving in England, Italy and Holland from 1941 to 1945 with the Canadian Army and marrying his war bride, Jean in Edinburgh, Scotland, he always said he had a very happy, exciting and fulfilling life. On repatriation, he joined the Toronto Fire Department in April 1946 and served 40 years, retiring in 1985. He served many years on the Executive of Labour Unions, attempting to improve working benefits. He was greatly honoured to receive Honorary Life Memberships in Toronto Firefighters, Ontario Professional Firefighters and Kitchener Firefighters Associations, as well as President Emeritus in the Retirees Association. He also served 30 years on the Board of the Firefighters Credit Union. Jack was a member of The Westmount Army and Navy Club, The Toronto Fire Department War Veterans Association and the Royal Canadian Legion, Mount Dennis Branch 31. Jack will be resting at NEWEDIUK FUNERAL HOME, KIPLING CHAPEL, 2058 Kipling Ave. (North of Rexdale Blvd), on Tuesday, April 30th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, May 1st from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Service and Committal will be in the Chapel on Thursday, May 2nd at 11:00 a.m. If desired, donations to Belmont House Special Care Unit, The Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, The Scott Mission, or the Alzheimer Society would be greatly appreciated by the family.
