JOSEPH BEATTIE Born County Antrim, Northern Ireland, September 3, 1918, passed away peacefully in Toronto June 2, 2014 surrounded by the love of his large family. He leaves his wife and partner of over 70 years, Betty (nee Howell) and will be deeply missed by his four children Gillian (Peter), Glenna (John), Karen and David (Christine) and lovingly remembered by his eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Sam and Robert and sisters Carol and Eileen. Joe arrived in Canada with his family in 1929 where they settled on a farm in Malton. He remained a farm boy at heart throughout his long life. During World War II Joe volunteered for overseas service with the RCAF and served with fighter command 1941-1945. He was a veteran of the Normandy landings and of the Allied advance through Europe. Following the war, Joe returned to Canada with Betty where together they built a life and raised a family. Joe joined Imperial Oil Limited in 1950 where he spent his career until his retirement in 1982. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Joe was the quintessential patriarch of his family who will be remembered always for his abundant strength, kindness, sense of fun, wit, humour, devotion to duty and, above all, devotion to his family. Our world is diminished without him. Joe's family is grateful to the nursing staff at Providence Healthcare for the care he received there during his final illness and gives special thanks to his caregivers Mila and Lily. A private family service will be held in Toronto on June 6th. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made in Joe's name to The War Amps or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
