MARSHALL EARL HOWARD WWII Veteran, DFC Earl passed away on January 31, 2014 at the Perley Rideau. Beloved husband of the late Rosina (nee Knechtel), loving father of Patricia Robinson (Derek) of Nepean, ON, James Howard (Li nda) of Atlanta, GA and William Howard (Karen) of Calgary, AB and much loved grandfather of James, Bob and Bill Robinson, Adam, Matthew, Jacqueline and Catharine Howard, and Robert and Ryan Howard. A doring great- grandfather of Ryan, Jacob and Leah Robinson. Loving brother of Eileen Smithson of Toronto and the late Charles, Kathleen, Florence and Robert. Earl was born in Mitchell, ON, on August 25, 1922, the second son of Charles and Catherine Howard. He enlisted in the RCAF in September 1941 and served in Bomber Command in WWII as a Flight Officer with the 408th Squadron, stationed in York, England flying missions over occupied Europe. Earl was decorated with a number of medals and honours throughout his military career including the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon returning home to Canada he married his beloved wife Rosina Knechtel in 1945, with whom they shared the next 52 years until her passing in 1997. After retiring from a successful career with the Province of Ontario, Earl returned to Europe several times, visiting various memorial sites of fallen comrades in Germany, France and Belgium, and rekindled some old friendships from York, England. Constant volunteer with various organizations, fantastic father, grandfather and great- grandfather, a kind and friendly gentleman, loved by all who met him, he will be so dearly missed. Many thanks to the Perley Rideau and especially the wonderful staff of Gatineau 1 North for their help and support in his final years. A memorial service to celebrate Earl's life will be held at a future date.
