BERTHOLD, Irene Anna (née Viczko)
Irene Berthold of Saskatoon, SK passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 12, 2014 at the age of 99. Irene was born to Regina Kota and Gregory Viczko on her grandparents' farm in the Meacham, SK area on October 14, 1914, the third of eleven children. In 1917 her family moved to the Viczko family farm in the Prud'homme area. It is here that she received her early education. She attended high school at the Prud'homme Convent and Ursuline Academy in Bruno, and then attended Normal School in Saskatoon in 1933-34 where it took one carload of grain to pay the tuition of $100. She then taught at various schools in the province. Irene married Frank Berthold in 1942 in Sudbury, ON and it was here that their first of three children was born. In 1944, they moved back to the Berthold family farm near Naicam, SK and Irene continued to teach at various district schools until her retirement in 1974. In total, her teaching career spanned 27 years. During retirement, Irene and Frank spent many winters in Arizona and travelled to several exotic places including Hawaii, Fiji and Hungary (where Irene's father & mother were born). Irene and Frank moved to Luther Riverside Terrace, a senior's complex, in Saskatoon in 1999 where she enjoyed meeting new people, playing cards and getting together for coffee and fellowship. She was a resident of Preston Extendicare for the final months prior to her passing. Irene is survived by her daughter Marie (Jim) Frey of Calgary, AB, Lois (Keith) McLellan of Moncton, NB; daughter-in-law Charlotte Berthold of Naicam, SK; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Donna Berthold of Saskatoon, Loren (Marilyn) Berthold, Chloe and Jaylyn of Naicam, SK, Lisa (Ian) Blume of Wichita, KS, as well as numerous in laws, nieces & nephews. Irene was the last surviving member of the George and Regina Viczko family. She was predeceased by her son Gilbert in 1997 and husband Frank in 2008. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Matthew Ramsay at 11:00 am on March 17, 2014 at St. Francis Xavier Parish (222 Willow Street, Saskatoon, SK S7J 0C4). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (279 3rd Avenue N, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8) or the Breast Cancer Foundation (2-1124 8th Street East, Saskatoon, SK S7H 0S4).
