Melvin Dean Van Meter
of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, December 8, 2012. Mel was 85 years old, and died peacefully at home with his family by his side. Mel was born on the family farm, in Moose Range, Saskatchewan on October 4th, 1927 to Loretta and Milton Van Meter. On June 10th, 1954, he married his darling Ann Slusar. Mel was a schoolteacher, and taught for 35 years in rural Saskatchewan. Mel and Ann were blessed to raise 3 loving children. Mel was a quiet, gentle and patient man who was passionate about his family. Through difficult times, there was never a harsh word or any self-pity, only endurance, strength of character, and expressions of thankfulness and joy. He had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed curling, cross-country skiing, skating, camping and traveling with the family, square dancing, playing cards, and going with friends for coffee. Mel was very active in the community, serving on countless boards and committees. Upon retirement, he and Ann had a hobby farm in BC, raising chickens, sheep and lots of fruit and berries. Mel and Ann travelled across Canada, Alaska, the US, and throughout the world on many wonderful cruises. Mel is survived by his loving wife, Ann, his son and 2 daughters and their spouses, Marvin (Lee nee Crawford) Van Meter, Bernadene (Earle) Magnuson, and Cheryl (Howard) Rusk. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, one great- grandson, and his sisters, June Rudy and Mae Colvin. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, two brothers, Jim and Jack, and two sisters, Edna and Lorene. A Celebration
of Mel's life will be held on Wednesday December 12th at 10 am at Acadia-McKague's Funeral Centre, 915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (279 3rd Ave N Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8) or the Canadian Cancer Society (Suite 101-440 2nd Ave N, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2C3). Our special thanks to Drs. Singh and Akhtar, the staff at the City Hospital GEM program, and the Palliative Home Care. We will miss you and always carry your memory in our hearts.
