Carol Caines Smith, 69, of Olyphant passed away comfortably on Thursday in her home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

A lifelong resident of Olyphant, Carol was the youngest daughter of the late Harry and Emily Caines. Carol was a 1961 graduate of Olyphant High School and St. Mary Hospital's Mercedian School of Nursing. She spent her 42 year nursing career at Mercy Hospital, where she was widely known for her efficiency and willingness to provide excellent nursing care. Upon her early retirement, she spent the last seven years caring for her beloved granddaughters, Paige and Sadie. Her final wish came true as she held her newborn granddaughter, Delilah Rae, in her last days at home.

Carol exuded warmth to everyone she met. She was unfailingly eager to lend a hand to family, friends and neighbors. Even after her retirement, she was often found assisting friends and neighbors with nursing care. An excellent seamstress, she always volunteered her services to family and friends. Her petite five-foot-frame belied the boundless energy she had for life. Her friends and family, especially her granddaughters, were the center of her world and their comfort always came first with Carol.

Her favorite activities included spending time with her "girls," as she called her granddaughters. First called Nanny and then, inexplicably, "Dee," she was a fixture at every dance recital, play, graduation, karate test and concert. On warm days, she was frequently found at the park with both granddaughters.

She is survived by her two daughters, Cheryl McDonald and husband, John, Olyphant; and Caryn Smith Kasecky and partner, Craig Laudermilch, Enola; one son, Charles Smith and wife, Jennifer, Shermans Dale. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Paige and Sadie McDonald; and Delilah Smith. One of eight siblings, she is also survived by her sisters, Delores Wargo and husband, Michael; Alice Yantom of Olyphant; and Florence Thomas, Blakely; and her brothers, Harry Caines and wife, Jean; Ralph Caines and wife, Argiaj, of Olyphant; and Donald Caines, Dunmore; a sister-in-law, Florita Caines, Olyphant; 19 nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving and devoted partner, William Shanley; her ex-husband, Charles Smith; her brother, Albert Caines; her beloved sister-in-law, Carol Caines; and brothers-in-law, Joseph Yantom and Robert Thomas. She was also preceded in death by her two nephews, Ralph and Perry Caines.

The funeral will be Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Michael Wargo Funeral Home, 812 E. Scott St., Olyphant, with a brief viewing at 10 a.m. in the church sanctuary of Elm Park United Methodist Church, 712 Linden St., Scranton. Services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m.
