Chester E. Callis, 83, of Taylor, died Wednesday evening at Riverside Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Taylor. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Scherer Callis. Wed on Oct. 29, 1955, the couple would have celebrated its 59th wedding anniversary this year.

Born in Old Forge on Oct. 11, 1930, he was the son of the late Julia and John Callis. Attending the former St. Michael's School, he was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church before its closing. Honorably serving our country in the Army, he was a member of the VFW Post 4954 in Old Forge. He was also a member of Old Forge Senior Citizens. An avid gardener and craftsman, he always enjoyed visiting a good flea market. He will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends.
He is survived by his three children, Chester Callis and wife, Christine, Taylor; David Callis and wife, Karin, Dickson City; and Judy Shoemaker and husband, David, Scranton; his brother, Raymond Callis, Dickson City; four grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer Callis and Paul and Breanna Shoemaker; a great-granddaughter, Gabriella; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, Frank, Joseph and John Callis; and a sister, Helen Trakimus.
A graveside blessing service to be celebrated by the Rev. Andrew Sinnott, pastor of Nativity of Our Lord in Duryea, is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery in Old Forge.
