Dr. Edward Balish, 78, died at his home in Charleston, S.C., on Friday. His wife of 43 years, Marion, died in 2004.

Ed was born in Scranton, the son of the late Daniel and Mary Callahan Balish, and was one of 10 children. A graduate of West Scranton High School and the University of Scranton, lettering in football at both schools, he earned his Ph.D. in microbiology at Syracuse University in 1959. He was married to Marion Christopher in 1961 and the couple moved to Madison, Wis., where they raised a family and lived until 2001. Ed became a professor and chairman of the department of microbiology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He retired in 2012 as professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology at Medical University of South Carolina. His career, spanning nearly six decades, had many achievements and contributions to science and medicine.

He is survived by his sons, Christopher Balish, Miami, Fla.; Martin Balish, Portland, Ore.; and Stan Balish, San Diego; three granddaughters, Angela, Lucy and Josephine Balish, Portland; two sisters, Helen Balish and Margaret Brewinski, both of Scranton; brother, Tom Balish, Connecticut; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Frank, Col. Harry, John, Cmdr. Daniel and William Balish; and a sister, Mary Kunda.

His funeral will be Thursday with a liturgy celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Vladimir Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, 430 N. Seventh Ave., Scranton, by the Rev. Myron Myronyuk, pastor. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Twp.

A viewing for family and friends will be in St. Vladimir Church on Thursday from 9 until time of liturgy.
