Gene Tagle, Honesdale, died Wednesday. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan.

Born Dec. 28, 1925, in Jamaica, N.Y., son of Palmer and Ruth Kagel Tagle, he was employed by the Scranton Tribune until his retirement in 1990. A veteran of World War II, he served as a cryptographer in the Army in the Aleutian Islands in the North Pacific. He held a bachelor's and a master's degree in history from the University of Scranton. He was an active parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Honesdale, as well as a member of the Friends of the Wayne County Public Library executive council and a former trustee of the Wayne County Historical Society.
He is survived by a son, Gregory, and his wife, Bonnie, Honesdale; three daughters, Joanne Tagle, and husband, Jim Murray, Honesdale; Bernadette and husband, Tom Tomasky, Tucson, Ariz.; Aimee and her husband, Ed Holevinski, Lake Ariel; a brother, Palmer, Florida; a sister, Patricia Maurin, Virginia; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Bobbie Rodda; and a brother, Ferdy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Wayne County Library, North Main Street, Honesdale, Wayne County Historical Society, Main Street, Honesdale, or St. Vincent De Paul Society, c/o St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Church Street, Honesdale.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
