George H. "Harry" Birtel Jr., West Scranton, died Friday at the VA Medical Center, Plains Twp. His wife is the former Mary Piserchio.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late George H. and Marie Scavazzo Birtel. A graduate of St. Mary's High School, he attended the University of Scranton and proudly served in the Marine Corps. Before his retirement, he was employed as a manager of various local trucking companies.

George was an avid pool player and could be found playing often at Cosmo's. He was an animal lover and enjoyed his two dogs, Pekoe and Molly.

George will be missed by all who knew him.

Also surviving are a son, John Birtel, Scranton; daughter, Amy Wallis and her husband, Greg, North Carolina; brothers, Frank Birtel; and David Birtel and wife, Linda, all of Scranton; sisters, Marie Rippon and Carol Emerick, Williamsport; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by sisters, Barbara Bailey and Marion McLaughlin; and a brother, Vincent Birtel.

Private funeral services will be conducted at convenience of the family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Guido-Fiorillo Funeral Home, 120 S. Main Ave., Scranton.

Memorial contributions may be made in George's name to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, South Abington Twp., PA 18411.
