Gerard J. Coggins, 68, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Tuesday at home after an illness. He and his wife, the former June Ellen McIntyre, would have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on Oct. 21.

Born in Scranton, son of the late James and Evelyn Butler Coggins, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School class of 1963. He served with the Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Fiske. He was a member of the VFW Post 3474, the 20th Ward Social and Athletic Club. Before retirement, he was with Ironworkers Local 489 for 35 years. He was proud of his union and was an avid golfer.

The family would like to thank SouthernCare Hospice for all their kind and compassionate care.

Also surviving are his children, Gerard Coggins Jr., Scranton; Tracy Truncali and her husband, Joseph, Jessup; Richard Coggins and his wife, Maureen, Scranton; and Jeffrey Coggins, Scranton; eight grandchildren, Lauren, Gerard III, Jason, Megan, Alyssa, Halie, Nevin and Lucy; two sisters, Nancy Rafalko, Scranton; and Jean Travis, Scranton; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Zukowski; and a brother, James Coggins.

A blessing service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton. Interment will follow in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
