Verne Ann (Chipak) Rempe, a lifelong resident of Scranton, passed away peacefully Monday at the Dunmore Health Care Center after a brief illness. She was the widow of the late Francis P. Rempe, who died in 2008. He operated the Knotty Pine Restaurant and in later years the Knotty Pine Beer Distributing company. They were married for 67 years.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late prominent funeral director, Samuel H. Chipak and Susan Kocella Chipak.

She graduated from Marywood Seminary and Powell Business School. She worked in her earlier years as a legal secretary for various local law firms and retired from Marywood University, where she was secretary to the Dean of the School of Social Work.

She traveled extensively with her family to many countries and enjoyed wintering in Naples, Florida for many years. She was a past member of the Catholic Young Women's Club, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Elks Club in both Scranton and Naples, Fla. She was also a member of St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church, Scranton.

Verne was a mother unlike any other and a best friend to her children, whom she loved more than life itself.

She is survived by her children, Don, with whom she resided; and Donna Evans and husband, Ron. Also surviving are her sisters, Eleanor Margitich and Evelyn Swartz; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, funeral director John J. Chipak and wife, Marie; brothers-in-law, Stephen R. Margitich and John J. Swartz.

The family fondly thanks the staff of the Dunmore Health Care Center with a special thanks to Dr. Dominic Ruggiero and his nurse Mary Ellen for their unwavering care and concern for Verne over the past years.

A private Office of Christian Burial service was celebrated Friday, by the Rev. Robert Lozinski with entombment in Cathedral Cemetery. Pallbearers were Don Rempe, Ron Evans, Chris Spangenberg, Christian Spangenberg, Don Johnson and J. W. Chipak. Arrangements by her nephew, funeral director John L. Chipak, owner of the Chipak Funeral Home, 343 Madison Ave., Scranton.
